The UK is often viewed as a nation dominated by service-based industry and retail. As the heat map above shows, however, our manufacturing heritage is still alive and strong in the Midlands and the North. In the East Midlands and West Midlands, 11.9% and 10.5% of the workforce respectively are employed in manufacturing. In London, where service-based industries dominate, manufacturing accounts for just 2.3% of the workforce.
